The Class
In 7th grade, students will continue to explore the geography of the world. This year we will focus on regions in the eastern hemisphere. As we investigate the different regions of the world, we will learn about and apply the 5 themes of geography. This course emphasizes map reading, the use of and creation of charts and graphs, and application of concepts to better illuminate the social sciences. Students will work individually and in groups throughout the course of the year. We will be using numerous resources to help gain a broader view of the world.
Location Place Regions
Movement Interaction
I am located in D210. I am responsible for teaching four classes of 7th graders from 10:29am to3:45pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.Wednesday from 10:04am to 2:15pm. The best way to reach me quickly is through our building’s e-mail addresses, which we keep open throughout the day. However, if you don’t have a computer at your disposal, we have phones in our classrooms. They will not ring into us while we are teaching usually, but will deliver your message to voicemail. We can access these messages on planning periods or lunch. Call into the CMS main line (720-972-5240) and then enter the teacher’s extension: Bohannon (3270). My direct administrator is Glenda Bates at 720-972-5252.
Classroom Expectations:
You are all young adults and as such you will be expected to act appropriately
Be Engaged
I define engagement in the following way:
Helpful Hints
If you follow these hints, I guarantee you will excel not only in this class but all of your other classes as well!
Challenge yourself. Ask yourself: Are you doing the best that you can at this moment?
Keep yourself organized and communicate with both your guardians and me.
Put a full heading on everything (Name, Date, Period, title in upper right hand corner). Do you want credit for doing the work?
Read the directions …….read them again. Do you read a recipe just once?
Listen, listen, listen. It prevents embarrassing moments and unnecessary questions.
Bring your materials to class every day. This means your notebook, pen, pencil, planner, and a personal reading book. They don’t do you any good sitting in the locker. Check the “Did You Bring?’ sign for any other required supplies for that day.
Think for yourself. The right thing to do is not always the popular thing to do.
Homework:
Homework will be assigned based on the lesson for the day. Students should expect homework once a month, generally about international news articles. This will start after October 16th, and they will be able to use MY Acess from home to write their response.
ABSENCES/TARDIES
Students who are absent have, by district policy, one day for each day gone plus one to make up work that was missed while absent and still receive full credit if the assignment is done correctly. If the work is not turned in and becomes a zero, the student will be required to attend Wednesday ZAP (Zeros Aren’t Permitted) for assessment and re-teaching.
GRADING
Daily Grading will be in accordance with District and CMS policies. A minimum of one grade will be entered into the grade book weekly, but frequently there is a daily grade that is posted. The students will be placing 75% of their work into the Geography notebook. They will gade their own work most of the time. I will also collect and score every 2-3 weeks.
Homework: I typically have students finish class work at home if it is incomplete. When it is given we will begin in class with complete instructions and directions.
Long-term assignments, such as reports, investigations, extended experiments, problem solving activities, and trimester projects, will be assigned with sufficient notice. These long term assignments will be broken into several parts and scored separately so that a child’s grade does not drop unexpectedly without time for a parent to intervene and assist the child.
Late class work is lowered 10% each day. After five days, the highest possible score for completed, accurate late class work is 50%.
Group work is assigned, but grades are given on an individual basis by review of each member’s performance. There is no group grade.
PROGRESS REPORTS
Progress reports will be accessable weekly via scholars.. The performance of students with Ds, Fs, and 0s will be reviewed every week, and they will be required to attend Wednesday ZAP (Zeros Aren’t Permitted) during core block time. Parents will be notified. ZAP is a time when students are assessed and given re-teaching to insure they understand the skill or concept. Those students with As, Bs, Cs and no 0s meet in enrichment groups where that week’s concept or skill is taken to a deeper level of understanding, or they get to enjoy events outdoors or in the computer lab. The students in ZAP are exposed to the enrichment piece the following day in that class, if possible.
When the District opens Infinite Campus (our grade book) to parents, you will be able to log in at any time and see real time grades for your child. This program will not be open at the beginning of school because it is new and teachers are being trained on it in August.Currently you may access your students grades every Friday SCHOLARSMART.
AGENDAS
Agendas will be utilized to communicate all assignments daily. Please start the year by routinely checking the agenda each night and discussing its contents with your student. Each teacher in the core has students write in the assignments for class at the beginning of each period each day. In addition, we provide an on-line agenda service at the CMS web site. Enter the site, click on Teacher pages, click on Outer Limits, and then click on Weekly Agenda. We update this site daily with class and homework for your reference. The site may direct you to the individual teacher’s site where we have placed on-line calendars, practice pages, and links to sites with content information.
ASSESSMENTS
The District maintains a web site that contains all of the assessments and scores that students have received. Your child will be taught how to enter and see his/her scores, set goals related to those assessments, and be able to come home and share that information. Google SCHOLARSMART and log in by entering your child’s school ID number. The password is the last four digits on the child’s Social Security card. If you are new to our district, the assessments being given in August will be uploaded for your reference beginning the end of September.

Challenges/Risks:
It is my expectation that you will try to step out of your learning comfort zone and experience new things. Take risks and advocate for yourself. Don’t seek my immediate help or approval on assigned tasks and activities. Be willing to try and try again, problem solve, and move onto another question before seeking my help. I will walk the room, monitor your progress, and help you---so don’t worry.
