Challenge #1:

Plan a route from Eads to Last Chance

Step #1: Find each town’s grid location on the City Index

Step #2: Locate each town on the map

Step #3: Plan the route

· Identify each highway as an Interstate (I-), United States (U.S.), or State (SH)

· Include the general direction

· Include the destination of each step

Step #4: Calculate the number of miles in the trip

· Look for red numbers to indicate the number of miles between red stars

· Add up black numbers when you can’t use the red stars

Step #5: Calculate the time the trip would take if you averaged 60 mph

· Divide the number of miles driven by 60; any remainders are minutes

EXAMPLE:

Eads is at K-26; Last Chance is at F-22

Route:

· U.S. 287 north to Kit Carson (20 miles)

· U.S. 287/ U.S. 40 northwest to Limon (61 miles)

· SH 71 north to Last Chance (36 miles)

Total Miles = 117 miles

Time: 117 divided by 60 = 1 with a remainder of 57 = 1 hour, 57 minutes
