World Language Tips for Parents
Hablas español? Sprechen Sie Deutsch? NOOO???!!! If you’re a parent of a student learning a World Language, you may be perplexed as to how you can help your student at home, especially if you don’t know the language yourself! Here are some tips to make this road a little smoother:
- Help your student make and use flash cards to practice vocabulary
- Check out language books, CDs or software from your local library
- Utilize the Internet to explore cultural websites (monitor carefully!)
- Watch for cultural events in your community that the whole family can enjoy
- Try some new recipes at home, or visit an ethnic restaurant
- Remind your student of the “bigger picture” – how knowing another language will bring many benefits for the years ahead!
Course Descriptions
6th Grade Exploratory Classes - these classes give sixth graders an opportunity to get a brief look at the language and culture of German and Spanish speaking people. Students spend one trimester in each language.
Level 1 Language Classes - this course is offered in German or Spanish and is designed to lay the framework of the grammar and sentence structure of the language. Students learn a variety of vocabulary including how to speak and write the fundementals of the language. This course is open to 7th and 8th graders.
Level 2 Language Classes - this courseis offered in German or Spanish and builds on the foundation of the Level 1 course and allows the student to expand their speaking and writing ability. Students completing this course may be ready for Level 3 courses in high school.
