A district-approved curriculum is taught at all grade levels and is supplemented with an interactive program called “History Alive”. This interactive program is used in all three levels of social studies. All curriculum items used in social studies supports reading and writing.
Some highlights of the Social Studies program at Century Middle School include the National Geographic Geography Bee that is held in December. The Geography Bee tests a student’s knowledge of basic geography facts. The winner at the school level will complete a test and possibly go on to the state level. If the student wins the state level, they will advance on to the national level, which takes place in Washington, D.C. Century Middle School has been proud to produce several state qualifying students. The other highlight of the Social Studies program is the annual Civil War Reenactment. For an entire week, the 8 th grade students at Century are immersed in recreating a battle from the Civil War. Students are dressed for the part, rehearse, and take part in a battle scene that is filmed so they will always remember the experience.
