Book Talk Tuesday's back with your next book pick. This week, we're spotlighting, Chains, by Laurie Halse Anderson. Set during the Revolutionary War period in New York, it is about a 13 year old girl, Isabel and her sister, Ruth, who become enslaved by cruel masters who do not support the Americans' fight for independence. When Isabel meets Curzon, another enslaved boy, he encourages her to act as a spy against the British and try to steal secrets from her owner that will help America win its freedom. At first, Isabel doesn't want to, but then something happens to Ruth that makes her want to do anything for her freedom. This book is a true page-turner, filled with suspense, interesting historical details, and plenty of emotion. Best of all, it's the first book in a terrific series. We are giving you one more week to look for any of your lost items.  Please check the lost and found bins this week for your missing coat, lunch box, shoes, water bottles or anything that you have lost.  ALL items will be donated this weekend!

Looking for your next great read? Look no farther than the Century Library. Every Tuesday, we'll spotlight an amazing book in a new feature called Book Talk Tuesday.

Did you know that during World War II, Native American soldiers saved countless Americans? Their stories have been classified until very recently, but Joseph Bruchac's novel Code Talkers brings their heroic stories to life. This story is about 16 year old Ned, a Navajo boy, who served his country during the war as a code talker, someone who sent secret messages in the Navajo language. This book is perfect for readers who enjoy military stories, but it also honors the language and culture of Navajo Native Americans. You can check out Code Talker in the library, but it is also available for check out as an eBook on Sora.

The monthly meeting for STUCO and NJHS is on Wednesday December 1st at 8:15 am until 8:45 am in the library! See you there!

Our first book is Counting by 7s by Holly Goldberg Sloan. Fans of Wonder, Out of my Mind, and Fish in a Tree will love this book. Willow Chance is a 12 year old genius who has trouble connecting with others, except her adoptive parents. When they die suddenly in a tragic accident, Willow is left alone. However, this book is not a tragedy. It is filled with humor, hope, and quirky characters who help Willow push through her grief and connect with others who eventually become like family. Counting by 7s is a feel-good story that spotlights a neurodiverse character. You can check out Counting by 7s in the library and online on Sora.

Mon is Decades Day. Find something from the past. Dress in neon colors to support the 80's, try a poodle skirt for the 50's, or even try something out of this world for future decades.

Tue is Disney / Star Wars Day. Time to dig out the ears you got as a souvenir, your Disney t-shirts, or your best Disney or Star Wars costume. Humm… wonder if classic Disney can meet Star Wars, Mickey Mouse dressed like Luke or Minnie Mouse dressed as a Stormtrooper.

Wed is Cancer awareness day. Did you know that 1.9 million people will be impacted by cancer THIS year alone? Show your support and dress for a cancer that has impacted you or someone your know. Options may include : pink for breast cancer, green for kidney cancer, or light purple to represent all cancers.

Thurs is Pj day - Time to pull out your favorite pair of fuzzy slippers, your favorite stuffed animal, and your jammies. If you roll right out of bed, please remember to brush your teeth. Just a reminder that all PJ’s MUST be SCHOOL appropriate.

Fri is Halloween costume day. Be anything you want, just make sure you have read the requirements on your costume before you dress up.

Have questions about appropriate attire for the week, please see Mrs. Espey, Mrs. Pearson, Ms. Swain or stop by the office and ask for clarification. Can’t wait to see what you come up with next week.

What does Open-Minded mean to you?  We had Ashlynn and Lanie ask Miss Ross and Mrs. Pearson this question.

Miss Ross said, Open-minded means to consider different perspectives and views-especially from people who aren’t always like us.  It means to be open to new ideas and be empathetic towards everybody!

Mrs. Pearson said, Open minded means you are willing to consider new ideas, explore new things, discover new places and learn about our world without prejudice or bias.

Today is Constitution Day. This morning 50 flags, each representing a state of the union, were posted in front of the school by members of  National Junior Honor Society and Student Council to honor our country, the founding documents that helped create our government,  and those who have served to protect our freedoms.

On September 17, 1787, the delegates to the Constitutional Convention met for the last time to sign the document they had created which established the guidelines for our government and is now known as  our Constitution. Today we celebrate that document which was a cornerstone in founding our country.

In 2004 a law was passed that mandates that all students and schools study the Constitution, and that this day, once known as Citizenship Day, celebrates this document that founded our country. Today Century celebrates Constitution Day and we as Century Middle School thank those who currently serve, or who have served our country, by flying the stars and stripes of our country. Today these flags help all of us remember how important the Constitution is to our country.

Congratulations, you’ve all earned a hat day next Wednesday for reaching our fundraising goal!
