Remote Learning Starts 4/1!

Letter from 4/5:

Dear parents and guardians:

As you are now aware, the Adams 12 Five Star School District has, in conjunction with many other districts, decided to continue remote learning through the end of this school year. While this is not the news we had all hoped for, we want everyone to stay safe and healthy during this challenging time.

Century Middle School remains committed to providing your student the highest quality education possible under these circumstances. Our teachers will continue to seek out resources, ideas and technology that will enhance your student’s remote learning to the very best of their abilities. Teachers are still making adjustments to the volume and types of work they are assigning, and we continue to ask for your patience and understanding as these refinements are occurring. It is still a work in progress, but our teachers are reporting that reconnecting with their students this first week has been an incredibly positive experience overall.

There are a couple of items we have received questions about that we would like to clarify.

  • Attendance is only taken at the end of the week and accounts for a student’s participation with his/her teacher during the previous week.

  • Participation includes making a reasonable attempt to complete assignments and activities through the week for that particular class.

  • Students who are not participating will be marked absent. If you have extenuating circumstances which prevent your student from having any participation during the week, please reach out to your student’s teachers and counselor via email.

  • Students will continue to receive grades in much the same manner that they would if they were still physically in school. Again, teachers are making lots of adjustments, so please be patient, and ask questions if you are unsure about how your student is being assessed.

  • Parents/guardians can access all grades, as before, in the Infinite Campus (IC) system.

  • As long as students are actively participating and engaging with their teachers in remote learning, students will maintain or even improve the grades they earned during the first three quarters of the year.

  • Students who choose not to actively participate in remote learning could have their grades drop.

Letter from 3/31:

We are so very excited that Century’s remote learning plan is set to kick off this Wednesday, April 1st. Please remember, as we enter this new learning space, that this is uncharted territory for students, families, and teachers. We will all need to grant each other some grace in learning new routines.

We are committed to providing remote learning that serves all of our students and provides a reasonable balance. Your student’s teachers have been hard at work over the last few days preparing engaging and meaningful lessons. Teachers will be reaching out to students through various platforms like Google Classroom or Schoology starting Wednesday. Links can also be found on teacher pages under the Century Web Page. Students are expected to engage in the lessons provided by their teachers; and the students’ engagement will show their “attendance” in classes (they are not required to log in or participate every day). You will see your student’s attendance recorded on Fridays only but will reflect the entire week. Please also make sure to check Infinite Campus (IC) for grades. The grades may not look the same as they usually do since the assignments will be different than what is offered in a traditional classroom.

Our teachers, counselors, and mental-health providers will be offering optional office hours where students can get help with online work, ask questions, and simply connect from a social-emotional standpoint. These virtual office hours will be in different formats: discussion boards, Google Chat, Google Hangouts Meet, Gmail, or Zoom. We have put together a document with details about everyone’s office hours which can be accessed here.

Thank you for being a part of our Comet Family. We hope that all of you continue to remain healthy and safe.
