Back To School Information
Dear Comet Students and Families,
We hope you have enjoyed your summer. We are looking forward to welcoming you back to Century in the next few weeks. This letter has lots of important information, so please make sure you read it carefully.
Our first day of school will be Tuesday, August 16, 2022. This day will have 6th graders attending from 9:00am - 11:45am and 7th and 8th graders attending from 12:00pm - 2:45pm.
It is crucial that you know that we are operating on a Wednesday schedule that day, even though it is Tuesday! There will not be any lunch served that day either. Because of the short turnaround time for 6th graders being dismissed, and 7th and 8th graders being dropped off, traffic in the middle of the day will be extremely challenging! Please, please consider having your student walk or ride the bus that day. If you absolutely can not do either of those, please arrange to drop off or pick up your student a block or two away from school. We cannot emphasize enough that the middle of the day traffic will be incredibly difficult!
On Wednesday, August 17, all students will attend a full day of school and lunch will be served. However, even though it is a Wednesday, we will not be operating on our regular Wednesday schedule. Students will follow a schedule which will have them attending from 9:00 a.m. until 4:15 p.m. Please make note of this.
Starting on Thursday, August 18, our regular schedule will be in place.
All families should have already received notification to participate in Online Check-In. This is a critical step in returning to school. Please use this link (https://www.adams12.org/resources/online-check-in) to complete the process.
Class schedules and teacher assignments will be available in Infinite Campus in early August for families who have completed the annual online check-in process.
Century Middle School’s Back-to-School night will be on Monday, August 15, 2022. We will also be having our club rush this night in the cafeteria where you can see the club offerings for the year.
Because we do not have ample parking at the school, we encourage you to walk or bike as you are able. Otherwise, we have divided the night into three different segments, with a brief time in between, to allow for people to come and go, and hopefully free up some parking.
Students with last names A-H: 4:30-5:15
Students with last names I-P: 5:30-6:15
Students with last names Q-Z: 6:30-7:15
If you cannot make your scheduled time, please feel free to attend any session. Please note that the building will close promptly at 7:15 p.m.
Back-to-school night is a great time to bring in your student’s school supplies. Here is a link to the supply list. We will have a central location for you to drop off the shared supplies, such as tissues, hand sanitizer/wipes, colored pencils, highlighters, glue sticks, and copy paper. All other supplies can be placed in your student’s locker.
We will be issuing hallway lockers to all students this year. Students will have set times during the day when they can and cannot go to their lockers. Students may use a string backpack (approx. size 14” x 18”) to store their materials and carry with them throughout the day. Larger bags or backpacks with traditional straps are not permitted in classrooms, but can go to and from school with the student and be stored in a locker during the day.
Dress Code, IDs, and Personal Electronic Devices Updates
Safety is a top concern at Century, and as part of our ongoing efforts to keep everyone at school safe, we want to share just a few of our important policies.
Century Middle School will continue to allow students to wear hoodies, however, at no time will students be permitted to wear their hood up while inside the building. Staff needs to be able to clearly see student faces, and this is difficult when students have hoods tightened around their heads.
Inappropriately sheer, tight, short, or low-cut clothing that bares or exposes traditionally private parts of the body, including but not limited to, the stomach, buttocks, upper thigh, back and breasts is prohibited.
All students will be issued an ID and lanyard for the school year. Students must wear the ID visibly above their waist. Students who do no have their school-issued ID will be given a temporary wristband ID. If a student has five days without an ID, a new one will be issued and a charge will be added to their Pay For It account for the replacement. Any person without a visible school-issued ID, should be immediately reported to the nearest staff member.
Cell phones are not a necessary component of learning. Students will no longer be permitted to have their cell phones on during class times. Cell phones must be stored in the students’ locker. They may be used before and after school. Cell phones will not be allowed during lunch. Students who have a 504 or health plan that requires a student to have access to their cell phone will be permitted. Students may also use a school phone to call parents or guardians if they are ill or otherwise need to reach them. Parents/guardians needing to contact their student during the school day can call the office, and messages can be delivered to students. Earbuds/airpods are also not permitted. Students may use wired headphones with their Chromebooks during classes if needed. These can be purchased for $1 in the main office. The loss, destruction, or theft of any personal electronic devices, other than the school-issued Chromebook, will not be investigated by school personnel.
Our pick up/drop off routes remain the same as in years past. The loop furthest south is for parent/guardian pick up/drop off and parking. The northernmost loop is for buses only and the parking lot by the flagpole is for staff! Please do not drop off students before 8:45 a.m. We do not have any adult supervision, and we want your students to be as safe as possible. Students should leave campus by 4:25 p.m. (2:55 on Wednesdays) unless they are participating in a school-sponsored club or activity. Please do not park in the parking lot by the flagpole. If you park there toward the end of the day, you will likely be trapped by the buses. If you do get stuck, you will have to wait until the buses leave.
Bus routes can be found by going to Adams12.org, clicking on Quicklinks on the upper right banner, and then clicking on Bus Routes. Any additional questions about transportation should be directed to the district’s transportation office.
Again, we are looking forward to seeing all of you in the coming weeks. It is going to be a fantastic year!
