Hi! I am Karen Cohn, one of the Learning Specialists (Special Education Teachers) at Century Middle School. I have been teaching middle school special education since 1994, and in Adams 12 since 1996. I attended the University of Denver for my Bachelor's Degree, and the University of Phoenix for my Master's Degree. I love it here at Century because of all of the wonderful staff I work with, and because the students and their families are wonderful. When I'm at home, I enjoy reading science fiction, playing with my dog, and gardening.
If your student's schedule looks different - particularly if you were expecting your student to have me as a teacher for one or two classes, your student still will, but in a different way. This year, we will be following a model called collaborative or co-taught. I have included a link (here) to help explain what that means, what it will look like, and why we are choosing to do it. It may look somewhat similar to your student's elementary school, in that your student's schedule will have him/her in class with a general education teacher, but I will be there also, and will sometimes take him/her out of class for extra help, either alone or with other students with similar needs.
